Mother Rock Micro Farm

We Gave Up, And This Happened

Hello, Friend!

Most of the time, we put as much care as possible into growing healthy crops -- watering, weeding, feeding, battling pests, and so on, over and over. There's always something that needs more attention, and we do our best to keep up.

But we gave up on our artichokes last summer.

It was an experiment to try to grow them in this climate anyway, so when they didn't produce any bulbs despite their great bushiness, we just figured it was too warm here. For the rest of last season and through the winter, we totally neglected them. We didn't even water them. They died back.

And then early this spring, they began to grow again, the little troopers. Not expecting much, we felt guilty enough to at least give them some water and a little fertilizer.

Lo and behold, they're producing!

This is truly one of the most exciting things we've witnessed on our farm.

Of course, now that we've looked into what happened, we understand that artichokes need a cold period to produce bulbs. It's likely we simply planted too late last year.

But what's really amazing here is how resilient Nature can be! Even with bad artichoke parents, these plants have found a way to do their thing, on their own time.

We can always be better stewards of Nature, but also, it's not all on us to make things grow -- she's the one who makes the magic happen.
