It's such a joy to harvest what you've planted.
Especially when you don't quite know what to expect. Any root crops are a bit of a fun surprise to pull up, but you can gauge how a beet or onion is doing beforehand. But with garlic, who knows if the bulb will still be intact and untouched by underground critters? For potatoes, it's a treasure hunt that could give you 2 potatoes, or 12 -- you just don't know until you're digging around.
Now, our harvests last year weren't this good. Half of the garlic was damaged and got moldy. A whole row of potatoes had to be pulled before they even started producing due to blight. It was still joyful to harvest what we did. And those challenges last year make this year's harvest even more joyful.
The joy is as much about completion as it is about the end result.
Seeing a thing through from start to finish is satisfying. In our world of never-ending scrolling, never-ending task lists, never-ending [fill in the blank], we are less grounded these days in the natural cycles of life. Growing food puts us in partnership with these cycles.
Of course, this isn't the only way to experience the joy of harvesting what you've planted. Where do you find this satisfaction in your life?
